Architect, Football Coach and Micro Farmer, Em.Prof. Gary Moore

Episode 014
My guest is a person who is not afraid of change. In fact he embraces it. Gary Moore.

Today’s guest has worn many hats in his life. He has been an Architect, an academic and Dean, Football Coach, and now a successful micro farmer. The interesting thing is that he has been successful in every single career he’s had. My guest today is Emeritus Professor Gary Moore.

Gary Moore arrived in Australia to take up the position of Dean of the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Sydney in 1997. Since then he has called Australia home. A country that has seen him occupy and succeed in all the positions he’s had.

Gary graduated as an Architect from the University of California, Berkeley. Instead of opening his own practice, he dedicated his life to research and academia. He also has degrees in Developmental Psychology and Environmental Psychology. His research has been mainly in these two areas.

He arrived in Australia to become the Dean of the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Sydney in 1997 – a position he held for 9 years.

Gary’s other passion is football (soccer). After leaving his life as a researcher he became a professional football coach and educator. He was the main coach for Sydney University Soccer Football Club team which went on to win the Football NSW Women’s Premier League. He also coached the Metro East NSW State Titles team and the Hurlstone Park Wanderers. Gary was also a coach educator for Football Federation Australia. In fact, some of the people Gary has coached went on to play with the Matildas and the Socceroos.

After doing this for a few years, Gary and his partner decided to leave the city and move to the Kangaroo Valley (in southern NSW) where he now lives. He is now a successful micro farmer, where he lives a self-sustainable life and has won local competitions for the quality of his organic vegetables and produce.

In this interview you will learn how to develop and have a successful academic life, strategies on how to make difficult decisions, why team communication is so important and how to tackle new challenges and to adapt to change.
