Negotiation Strategies for International Students
Understanding the game, knowing what you want, preparing, and establishing connections are the key negotiation strategies for international students. In today’s TIPS, Juan Camilo Reyes shares useful advice on getting what you want.
For a negotiation to go your way, you must understand the game you’re going to play. Rules and expectations need to be set. You must also learn the laws and rules (both spoken and unspoken) of the country you are negotiating in. The habits and cultural customs of a place count as well. It always pays to be careful of what you say.
The next negotiation strategy for international students in Australia is knowing what you want. What is the best outcome or ideal scenario you are aiming for? And, just as important, what is the bare minimum you’re willing to deal with? It’s always best to start with your ideal. However, do have the most reasonably successful outcome in your vision as well.
Preparation is key. International students in Australia should know who or what you’re dealing with. Fortunately, Australians are very straightforward people. They thrive in a democratic and horizontal structure. There is no excuse for not doing your homework because of the resources readily available to you.
Finally, establish good connections. The tips you can learn from other people’s experiences, especially their mistakes, will make the effort of making friends worthwhile.
These are just a few negotiation strategies for international students. We hope you learned a lot. Best of luck!
